Our farm
How our fish is farmed
Everything we sell starts at Usigu, on the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria. Here is how a fish gets from our hatchery to your crate.

Step 1
Hatchery and breeding ponds
Our recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) hatchery runs on solar power. It filters and reuses its water, so breeding does not depend on conditions in the lake.
Ten breeding ponds hold our parent fish. We are scaling the hatchery up to 1.5 million fingerlings a month, for our own cages and for other farmers.
Step 2
Cages on the lake
We farm in deep-water cages off Uwaria Beach, with more than 500,000 fish growing at any one time. Fingerlings go in small and grow to market size in the cages.
We stock and harvest the cages in rotation, so there are fish ready on the farm through the year.

Step 3
Daily feeding and records
Our team feeds every cage by hand each day and watches how the fish take their feed. Each cage has its own records, so we can see how the fish are growing and act early if something changes.
Step 4
Harvest and cold delivery
We harvest in planned batches. Fish go into crates, onto our refrigerated truck and out to our hubs and buyers the same day.
On a typical day we dispatch around 1.5 tonnes of fresh tilapia.

Solar power
A farm that runs on the sun
Billy Fish runs entirely on solar energy. Panels on the roof feed the control room, which powers the farm, including the hatchery and its water filters.
Fish farms need power day and night, and the sun at Usigu supplies all of ours.
